The Strong-Drive SD Connector screw is specifically designed to replace nails in certain Simpson Strong-Tie connectors and is the only screw approved for that application. The load-rated SD screw has been tested and approved for use in many popular Simpson Strong-Tie products. In certain applications screws are easier and more convenient to install than nails, and the single-fastener load values achieved by the SD screw exceed those of typical 10d common or 16d common nails. In addition, the galvanized coating makes the SD screw ideal for interior and most exterior conditions.

  • Specifically designed to replace nails in certain Simpson Strong-Tie connectors and is the only screw approved for that application. The #9 and #10 SD screws replace 10d and 16d nails, respectively.

  • Tested and approved for use in many of our most popular connectors for both interior and exterior applications.
  • Ideal for use in connector applications where more control is desired or using a hammer is inconvenient.
  • 1/4" hex head with 0.37"-dia. integrated washer is stamped with the Simpson Strong-Tie "≠" sign and the fastener size for easy identification after installation.

    Simpson Strong-Tie #9 x 1-1/2" Strong-Drive SD

Posted by Raymond Huk on June 8, 2024

I mostly build decks. The time to attach joist hangers and the like with a hammer and nails takes too long and if you've dismantled a deck, you know how nails corrode and lose their holding capacity. I'm an engineer too and spent a lot of time in the metallurgy lab. The material used to make the screws, the shear strength, the resistance to corrosion in pressure treated wood and the consistency for the hex to fit in my driver and how Simpson compares to the competition, was what drove me to use their product. I often buy the larger boxes to save money and as I write this, I can't recall the price differences but they are all similar. Most screws of this type come from Taiwan and all I can say is when you buy cheap screws and hardware, you get what you pay for. I worked with suppliers around the world to learn this. When I put my name on a deck, I need to walk away knowing it's as strong and safe as possible and I want the customer to know the same. The building inspectors also know when I use premier components that I'm not cutting corners which helps in the long run. I specify Simpson in my plans and scope of work. I have used a few other brands in a pinch but only if they meet my structural demands but Simpson is my "go to" brand.
